AREBT Register of Psychotherapists, Counsellors, Supervisors & Coaches

Introduction

The Association maintains a Register of Accredited Psychotherapists and Counsellors whose accredited details are also to be found on the joint AREBT/BABCP CBT register.  . Some of our Accredited Registered Members also use coaching and hypnosis within a Rational Emotive Behavioural framework and we include them on this Register. However, do note that the Association only recognises specific REBT courses and currently only accredits rational emotive behaviour therapists ie MAREBT (Accred REBT) and FAREBT (Accred REBT). We can not be held responsible for the additional qualifications and accreditations our members may hold. Before your first meeting with a therapist we suggest that you may find our short Client Checklist a useful guide.

CPD & Supervision of Accredited Therapists

Once members become accredited, they must undertake a minimum of 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in REBT and CBT per annum to stay on the Register. Once accredited they must ensure that on an annual basis they submit a CPD log and course/conference attendance certificates as evidence. Accredited Therapists must also attend monthly clinical supervision. When they apply for re-accreditation after five years they must also submit a supervisors report.
At the bottom of this Web Page we include information about Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Multi-modal Therapy as our members are often qualified in these different approaches.

CBT Register UK

On the 24th November, 2008, The Association set up with the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies a joint CBT Register UK of Accredited CBT & REBT Therapists. This has become the leading UK Register of Cognitive Behavioural and Rational Emotive Behavioural Psychotherapists.

WHAT IS REBT?

REBT developed by Dr Albert Ellis, (credited as the founder of CBT) is a system of counselling or psychotherapy which teaches clients how their belief systems largely determine how they feel about and act towards situations, problems and life events in their lives. It focuses on four types of thinking that largely cause stress: Rigid demands such as 'musts' and 'shoulds'; awfulizing such as, 'Life is awful'; low frustration tolerance, e.g. 'I can't stand this’'; Damnation of self or others, e.g. 'I failed my exam, I am a real failure as a person'.  It is well researched and recognised as beneficial to individuals of all ages. Greater research bibliography detail can be found on this website.

Practitioners are often additionally qualified in:

COGNITIVE & COGNITIVE/BEHAVIOUR THERAPY. Both therapies combine the use of cognitive (thinking) and behavioural techniques to help clients to modify their moods, such as anxiety and depression, and behaviours by changing their self-defeating thinking, attitudes and beliefs. Similar to behaviour therapy, this approach is underpinned by much academic research that supports the techniques and strategies used to help with depression; stress; anxiety including phobias, panic attacks; obsessive-compulsive disorder; post-traumatic disorder.

MULTIMODALTHERAPY developed by Professor Arnold Lazarus is a technically eclectic and systematic approach. Technically eclectic as it uses techniques taken from many different psychological theories and systems, although it does not necessarily adhere to the theories concerned. Techniques and interventions are applied systematically, based on data from client qualities, the therapist's clinical skills and specific techniques. Focusing on seven key areas - Behaviours; Affect (emotion); Sensations; Images; Cognitions; Interpersonal and Drugs/biology. The aide memoire BASIC I.D. arises from the first letter of each.

HYPNOSIS & RELAXATION TRAINING may be used as an adjunct to any one of the above psychotherapies.

RATIONAL EMOTIVE and/or COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR COACH – many REB Therapists are also skilled and trained in RE & CB coaching. There is now an accreditation process available to such practitioners. Visit www.arebt.org - accreditation link.
